Kyra McGovern.jpg

Kyra McGovern

Co-President

Kyra is one of this year's QCSV Co-Presidents! She has been with the club for a total of four years, taking on roles as a general member, Millhaven Institution Program Coordinator, and most recently, Vice President. Over the past few years, she has spent her time facilitating hobby craft classes, art classes, and employment workshops. She has also taken on an independent project at Henry Trail, working to help improve the literacy skills of individuals in sex offender treatment programs.  Last year, Kyra led a team of volunteers in the creation of a mindfulness and meditation program, which has since been implemented in various prisons across Ontario.

Despite this year's COVID-19 restrictions, Kyra hopes to work with Markella and the rest of the QCSV team to engage in fundraising for the club, as well as the development of a life skills program for offenders who are soon to be released into their communities. She also plans to help the QCSV team work virtually (and eventually in person) with parolees during their reintegration process by organizing peer support groups and weekly phone call check-ins. Working with parolees is something that QCSV has been hoping to accomplish for a long time, so Kyra is very excited to help facilitate this opportunity. After graduation, Kyra is hoping to attend law school with intent to pursue a career in criminal justice reform or prisoner human rights law.

Markella Filtsos

Co-President

Markella is one of this year Co-Presidents of QCSV! She is currently in her final year of the accelerated nursing program at Queen’s. Markella has always has a passion for giving back and helping those in need, especially those within her community.

This is Markella’s third year with QCSV and she is eager for her presidential term despite the unprecedented times brought about by COVID-19. Given all the restrictions faced this year, Markella and Kyra have decided to shift the focus of the club from its usual work within the institutions to the Kingston community.

Nonetheless, she hopes to use her experiences from her involvement with QCSV to diminish stereotypes surrounding correctional services and advocate for those who are incarcerated as they are unable to do so for themselves.

Sara Mohamed

Finance and Logistics Coordinator

Sara is this year's finance and logistics coordinator for QCSV! This is her second year on the club, and she is currently in her 4th year of Life Sciences at Queen's.

Sara joined QCSV because the club provides a rare opportunity to not only volunteer with federal offenders, but to also improve their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Through her involvement with QCSV, she has developed a great interest in the concept of rehabilitation rather than retribution. In the future, she hopes to continue her involvement with correctional services from a healthcare stance, and work to reduce recidivism by focusing on this idea of rehabilitation.

Grace McClelland

Program Coordinator: Millhaven SIU and RTC

Grace is this year's program coordinator for Millhaven SIU and RTC! She is in her 4th year of Concurrent Education and Psychology, and this is her second year volunteering for QCSV.

Grace joined QCSV because she has always been interested in correctional services, as well as making a difference in the lives of others. She finds that inmates are often written off by society, and thus do not have the same opportunities as others to have the benefits of volunteer work. However, if rehabilitation is the goal, these opportunities are crucial. With QCSV, she has truly seen the impact that social interaction can make with this unique population!

Last year, Flo had the opportunity to lead workshops at Collin's Bay, Joyceville, and in Millhaven's SIU unit. She also ran both QCSV's website and blog, as well as co-developed the mindfulness program. Since getting involved with the club in 2019, Flo has learned the importance of QCSV's work in reducing recidivism rates. Specifically, the profound impact human interaction has on facilitating an offender's positive reintegration into society.

Bookkeeper

Sarah is this year's Bookkeeper for QCSV! She is a fourth year Linguistics major and Psychology minor. This is her second year on QCSV as the Bookkeeper, and she is very thankful to be a part of something so meaningful!

Working with offenders has made her realize that her future ambition in life is to be a social worker in a prison setting. Helping people and offering support is something that she has always valued. If it weren't for the opportunities that this club has offered Sarah, she would have never known that this is her true passion. Being a member of this team has given her numerous role models to look up to as she reaches these goals.
